It's been almost seven years since the twin towers were struck on that fateful September morning, and today the UK's Times Online reports that President Bush is finally getting serious again about capturing the man behind that attack. From this article:
Defence and intelligence sources in Washington and London confirmed that a renewed hunt was on for the leader of the September 11 attacks. “If he [Bush] can say he has killed Saddam Hussein and captured Bin Laden, he can claim to have left the world a safer place,” said a US intelligence source.
Shortly after 9/11, with Taliban forces weakened and Bin Laden thought to be hiding in Afghanistan or northern Pakistan, the President of the United States sought to focus the majority of his nation's considerable might on... say it with me now... Iraq.
According to former Bush Press Secretary Scott McClellan, the Iraqi war was simply a mistake by a president and advisers swept up in a grand plan of seeding democracy in the Middle East by overturning Saddam Hussein's regime. McClellan says Mr. Bush and his aides became so wrapped up in pushing the argument for war that they ignored intelligence that didn't fit the picture. (If you are interested in reading McClellan's memoir, please check my book carousel to the right.)
The fact that this administration intentionally "cherry-picked" the intelligence used as a justification for war is not a new revelation. And while some would argue that foreign intelligence agencies came to the same faulty conclusions about the danger Iraq posed, it should be noted that these agencies based their conclusions in part on intelligence received from the US.
Today, with the US military stretched so thin, it's no wonder that the president had to request help from British special forces. US intelligence reports that al-Qaida has rebuilt and is now stronger than at any time since their 2001 attack, so I hope this latest effort will be enough to bring Bin Laden to justice.
